About Legacy by Design

Richard enjoyed a long career as a scientist specialising in human genetics before a career change a few years ago. He joined the Blackhorse workshop community and went on to establish Legacy by Design to pursue a passion for furniture design and making.

Legacy by Design makes bespoke furniture using both modern and traditional methods with an emphasis on quality and longevity.

We work closely with the client to transform their design ideas into bespoke pieces that bring their vision to life.

We typically work with wood from locally sourced trees with established provenance, including lesser known species such as London Plane. Each piece is carefully crafted to show the unique character and features of the wood.

Trees and the wood they produce are important. They enhance our environments, store carbon and help combat climate change. The timber we use generally comes from local sources, typically wood that would otherwise have been destroyed.
